I guess I might have an idea about what this room served for. But is nothing scary, or strange about it

.
Could have served as a room where wooden barrels were stored on those pedestals. The pedestals were connected 2 by 2 by semi-arches made out of wood, or metal to sustain the barrels, so you can imagine 4 pedestals, 2 semi-arches to keep one wooden barrel off the ground level.

As for the shot, is indeed unique. Nice composition.
